1. What is the difference between kombucha and kefir?

ether elixir™ is 100% flash fermented juice containing seven lab documented strains of probiotics recognized by the World Health Organization as being vital for human gut health. Fermenting preserves the natural benefits of the juice as well as creates beneficial enzymes, b-vitamins, Omega-3 fatty acids and a certified ~10 billion CFUs of human beneficial bacteria & yeast (probiotics) per bottle.

In contrast, kombucha is 95% water, with added tea & sugar utilizing an uncontrolled growth of bacteria & yeast referred to as “a mother” or “scoby”. Kombucha has a lengthy fermentation process that allows airborne bacteria and yeast present in the surrounding environment to attached and grow as a part of the mother. This means that the majority of probiotics present in kombucha are often not of any benefit to human health – and can, in fact, be pathogenic given particular circumstances.

Example: Kombucha made in a 100 year old building on the east coast would have drastically different bacterial/yeast content than kombucha made in a new building on the west coast. Even such factors as previous building use and employees present can affect microorganism content.

Simply put, unlike ether elixir™, kombucha is not a reliable way to source human beneficial probiotics nor the additional benefits of a fermented food (as it is mostly water & concentrated caffeine from tea).

2. What is kefir?

That’s a good one, gimme a sec to google.  Traditionally, kefir is a fermented sheep’s milk that tastes like a more liquid version of yogurt originating from both Russia and Turkey.  The name is derived from a water solvable polysaccharide (kefiran) that develops as a result of the fermentation of particular strains of yeasts and bacteria.  The Russian word “ka-feer” actually translates to “feels good” as the LIVE & ACTIVE probiotics combined with the additional enzymes in kefir impart rush of euphoria.

3. I make my own kombucha, is there a mother?

That’s cool.  ether elixir™ is instead inoculated using seven lab documented probiotics recognized by the World Health Organization as being vital for human gut health.  That way you know what bacteria and yeast you are consuming!

4. How many CFUs should you have a day – can I drink a whole bottle?

The World Health Organization recommends 10 billion CFUs daily – particularly if combating any chronic disease or digestive complaints.

One 5 oz bottle of ether elixir™ replaces the need for a daily probiotic supplement and is a much higher concentration of LIVE & ACTIVE probiotics than any products containing freeze dried or “added” probiotics.

5. A bottle a day?! That’s an expensive daily serving – what can I do?

The price is nothing compared to medical bills related to chronic disease and intermittent illness.

If finances are a concern, the best thing to do is to drink as much as possible (1-2 bottles a day) for as long as possible (3-7 days).  This gives your body a chance to tip the scales in your gut.

Allowing the good bacteria and yeasts from ether elixir™ to crowd out the bad colonies of bacteria and yeast.  From that point you can reduce the dosage down to as little as 1 oz a day (preferably at bedtime because your digestive system repairs itself while you sleep) and it will help keep the good bacteria and yeast numbers above those of the pathogenic ones.

Since the probiotics in ether elixir™ are LIVE & ACTIVE at the time of consumption – they readily use the food in your stomach as their food source and begin replication immediately upon entering your body.  This allows for the dose of 1 oz (approximately 2 billion CFUs) to multiply exponentially by the time they reach your small intestines – which is where the majority of the microbiome is contained.

6. How many calories per serving?

What does this look like, Weight Watchers? 44 calories.

7. How much sugar?

6 grams of sugar. However probiotics have actually been proven to aid in sugar & carbohydrate metabolization lowering overall blood sugar.  When you consume LIVE & ACTIVE probiotics, like those contained in ether elixir™, they readily use the food in your stomach as their food source and begin replication immediately upon entering your body.  This helps pre-digest your food for you, taking a significant workload off of metabolic functions – such as insulin production.  In addition, the nutrients from your food are more readily available for your body to absorb and utilize – also aiding in faster, more comfortable digestion.

8. How do you keep it from getting alcoholic?

All fermented foods contain trace amounts of alcohol – as it is a natural by-product of yeasts.

ether elixir™ utilizes a flash fermentation process designed to encourage rapid proliferation of specific probiotics.  Therefore, there is not adequate time for yeasts to produce ethanol levels that would create an alcoholic beverage.

We also have strict quality controls in place.  By brewing in small, six gallon glass carboys, we are able to have an experienced brew master taste test each batch to ensure the correct flavor profile.

9. What is the shelf life?

Approximately 100 days from being bottled.

Since the probiotics are contained in their food source (juice) and have access to the gasses left in the headspace of the bottle – they continue to thrive for a long time.

Fermented foods do not spoil, as they are acidic in nature, but as the probiotics consume the sugar and oxygen left in the bottle the product will begin to taste more like vinegar and less like a beverage.

Product past the best by date still has lots of health benefits such as cooking (replacing vinegar in recipes), skin care (use as an astringent or face mask) or evening in gardening (diluted to add micro flora to the soil).

10. What is the shelf life once it has been opened?

ether elixir™ is sold in single serving bottles, as the product is very alive and best fully consumed once opened.

Each time the bottle is opened gasses re-enter the bottle and encourage more fermentation.

An opened bottle should be consumed within a week for best flavor.

A bottle that has been allowed to get warm after opening should be discarded.

11. Can a person of any age have a full serving i.e. toddlers?

Yes!  Children love ether elixir™ and need probiotics just like adults.

Since they have much shorter digestive tracts – most kids can drink as much as they want without any discomfort.

12. Is it safe during pregnancy?

Yes!  What better time to help your immune system?

In fact, babies’ microflora is populated from their mother (on the way out the birth canal) and environment immediately after birth – so it is crucial for them to have access to high quality probiotics from an early age.

ether elixir™ is also great for nursing babies – just swab on & around nipples immediately prior to breastfeeding.

13. I take probiotics in a pill- why is this better?

ether elixir™ contains LIVE & ACTIVE probiotics.  This means that they get to work the moment they enter your body.

Oral probiotic health has been studied at length and plays a key role in dental health.

Once swallowed, the probiotics contained in ether elixir™ immediately begin using the food in your stomach as their food source.  This means several things.  First, it means they have time to proliferate, which means they make more of themselves.  While this happens they are reducing your metabolic load by predigesting your food.  This aids in speeding along digestion because the nutrients are more readily available for your body to absorb. By the time the probiotics get to your small intestines they have become very active and are in the process of replicating – which is the basis to be considered a colony forming unit (CFU) and this increases the likelihood that they will establish a new colony inside of your body – thus crowding out pathogenic yeasts and bacteria that are often associated with disease.

In contrast, most probiotic supplements are freeze-dried and rarely come back to life in the quantities needed to have adequate impact on your health.

Probiotics are measured in CFUs – which stands for colony forming units.  To be considered a CFU a probiotic must be in the process of replicating at the time it is counted by a lab technician.  Since this is process that occurs while the probiotics are ACTIVE there is no way to quantify the number of true colony forming units (CFUs) in a freeze-dried product – as they are suspended and not technically living.

The CFU number listed on most probiotics supplements is prior to being freeze-dried.  Most manufacturers will admit that only a small portion (approximately 19-33% depending on varying studies) come back to life fully once in the human body.  And even so, since the probiotics are in an enteric coated capsule, the time it takes for the capsule to break down, and then for the probiotics to regain animation, and then begin the process of replicating (turning themselves into CFUs) it is very unlikely that all of this is done by the time they reach your small intestine – which is where most people need the bacterial reset.  Instead, they are likely enlivened just in time to be passed out of the human body.

Also, unlike ether elixir™, there is no way to tell if a freeze-dried supplement is even viable after transportation.  I have seen pallets of probiotics sitting outside of retailers’ loading docks in 100 degree sunny weather.  According to my own personal trials across various brands & various retailers approximately 1 out of every 3 bottles sold is completely dead and won’t even grow in an ideal warm sugar solution.

14. Can it be used as mixer?

ether elixir™ makes a fantastic mixer!

Both the flavors and carbonation work well in most cocktails – plus we’ve created a section on the website with some of our favorite combinations.  Blackberry mule, beetjito, and pear basil smash – just to name a few!

As an added benefit, high quality probiotics have been proven to help metabolize alcohol – which means less chance of a hangover!

When you consume alcohol, your body breaks it down from ethanol to acetaldehyde and then converts it to acetate.  Acetate is completely non-toxic, however, the intermediate by-product, acetaldehyde, is what causes illness associated with overconsumption of alcohol.

By adding LIVE & ACTIVE probiotics to your mixed drink or consuming them immediately after drinking – you are speeding up the metabolic process and converting the ethanol at a much quicker rate, not allowing it to stay in a toxic state.

15. Why are probiotics good for you?

Probiotics aren’t just good for you – THEY ARE YOU.  We all have approximately 10 times more bacterial cells in our bodies than we do human cells.

Probiotics are the bacterial and yeast cells that line the digestive tract – absorbing nutrients and fighting disease causing infections.  Since 80% of our immune system is contained in the micro biome – it only makes sense to bolster it with LIVE and ACTIVE probiotics regularly.

Aside from just treating digestive issues, probiotics have been linked to effectively treating a wide range of mental, neurological and autoimmune disease.

Studies showing drastic improvement in patients with everything from acne, diabetes, IBS, lupus, eczema, indigestion, Autism, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s all the way to cancer have been directly linked to high dose, regularly supplementation of LIVE & ACTIVE probiotics.

16. When is the best time to drink it most effectively?

ether elixir™ is most effective when consumed with food or directly after eating.

This allows the probiotics to use your food as their food source and begin proliferation.  It also greatly lessens your metabolic load, as well as, allows the nutrients in your food to be more readily available for your body to absorb.

You can have a 1-2 oz with each meal of the day to aid in digestion.  Or have as an addition to dinner (preferably in a wine glass!)  Your body focuses on repopulating its microflora mostly while you sleep, so consuming LIVE & ACTIVE probiotics prior to bedtime has an exponential benefit.

If you get any gastrointestinal discomfort after drinking ether elixir™ then it is best to consume before bed.  When you first begin probiotics the bad bacteria die off and they often release gasses that will trigger bloating or abdominal cramping.  There are also some people who are particularly sensitive to yeasts and will get discomfort despite having been taking probiotics for awhile.  This is completely normal, and they are still safe and good for your overall health, but drinking ether elixir™ before bed should mitigate any undesirable side effects.

17. Do I need a pre-biotic?

A pre-biotic is simply insoluble fiber that is really only necessary if using probiotics that are freeze-dried.

With the LIVE & ACTIVE probiotics contained in ether elixir™ pre-biotics are unnecessary because they are awake enough to use your food as their food source and begin proliferation.  It also greatly lessens your metabolic load, as well as, allows the nutrients in your food to be more readily available for your body to absorb.

18. Where do you get your kefir cultures?

We do not use kefir cultures – as they are uncontrolled bacteria and yeast growths.

ether elixir™ utilizes seven lab documented strains of bacteria and yeast recommended by the World Health Organization as being vital for human gut health.

19. What is the difference between coconut water kefir and juice kefir?

Aside from the obvious…juice kefir, unlike other forms of kefir has high levels of naturally occurring fructose which is utilized as food for the probiotics during the fermentation process. This creates additional b-vitamins, omega 3 fatty acids and digestive enzymes. With other types of kefir the probiotics are fed added sugar which causes them to merely multiply and likely does not create the same benefits as a truly fermented food.

20. Does the acid in your stomach kill the probiotics?

No.  Probiotics thrive in the human environment – it is where they are intended to be.

The problem with stomach acid is solely in relation to freeze-dried supplements not having time to come back to life prior to being damaged by the stomach acid.  It is not directly related to the probiotic, but rather to the freeze-drying process.

21. How is it made – why is it considered craft?

ether elixir™ is handmade by a dedicated and experienced brewmaster every step of the way.

We brew in 6 gallon glass containers and each one is tasted at regular intervals to ensure probiotic development and flavor profile.  We also hand fill our own sachets with dried flowers, herbs and spices.

After each brew has been set we smudge the room with desert sage – both to physically and energetically cleanse the air. During the delicate fermentation process we play specifically selected mantra music intended to evoke the universal vibration of life, inviting the probiotics to enter this world charged with positive energy.

ether elixir™ is a living beverage and we respect it as such.

22. How do you ensure they are alive?

The probiotics contained in ether elixir™ stay alive because they are kept in their ideal environment.

A dark amber glass bottle protects them from damaging lights while they are able to feed off of the remaining sugar in the juice medium and use the gasses purposely left in the head space of the bottle.  Refrigeration merely slows down their activity to prolong shelf life.

ether elixir™ is also tested by an independent lab to verify probiotic content.

23. Can ether elixir™ be used for anything other than a drink?

Probiotics have a multitude of uses!  We have a section on our website dedicating to different ways to use ether elixir™ ranging from skin care to cooking to gardening.

Check it out here:  http://probioticsyall.com/benefits-of-kefir/help-my-ether-elixir-got-lost-in-my-fridge-behind-some-brewskis-and-half-a-bottle-of-ketchup-and-now-tastes-and-smells-like-vinegar-what-should-i-do/

24. Is it ok for pets?

Yes. Pets also benefit from probiotics for improved health.  Also, the added benefits of a fermented food will often dramatically increase an animal’s quality of life.   Different animals require it to be given to them in different ways – please see our website for more details.

We have also created ether equine™ a line specifically target to give to horses that has had lots of success.  Please see our website for more information.

25. I have a busy day, will it make me poop all day?

Pooping is a great way to naturally detox.  You could just consume your ether elixir™ in the evening with dinner and your bowel movement should be resolved during non-working hours.

26. How much is too much? I eat yogurt that also has probiotics in it….if I drink ether elixir™ as well, would I be ingesting too many probiotics?

No amount is too much, it is an individual preference based on health & lifestyle.  And that yogurt you’re eating likely has less probiotics in it than it does added sugar and dairy.  Just something to think about…
